The research project Universal Design in an Era of Global Demographic Change was initiated by ”universal design e.V.”, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and conducted by the Chair of Industrial Design of Technische Universität München (TUM). The findings were showcased on May 27th 2008 at the TUM in Munich.
The following publication is timely as the significance of demographic change in Germany and its impact on social responsibility from all segments of society has become increasingly clear. This analysis by universal design e.V. and of the chair of Industrial Design at Technische Universität München is based on national and international research concerning the definition and establishment of universal design in the area of products, architecture and services. A variety of national and international projects are concerned with the concept of universal design, however a comprehensive, commonly-agree definition or systemisation has not yet materialised. Even though globalisation has progressed in many areas, cultural, economic and socio-political, working definitions of ‘universal design’ still differ.
The term UD is defined on the basis of expert interviews, product examples and concepts, and comparative activities in Europe and Asia that relate to UD.
